Happy (& Safe) Holidays!

safety first

It’s time to haul out the holly and deck the halls. As you look to add some holiday cheer to your winter wonderland, check out these tips to make sure your home is safe.

  • Place your tree at least 3ft from heat sources such as candles, fireplaces and heating vents.
  • Never leave a wood burning fireplace or burning candles unattended.
  • Adequately water your tree to prevent it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.
  • When decorating, never stand on the top step of a stepladder.
  • Unplug your tree lights when not at home or before you go to bed.
  • Use indoor lights only inside and use hooks to hang. Never tack or nail them in place.
  • Inspect last year’s holiday lights for broken pieces, frayed wiring or loose connections.
  • Switch to LED lights. Not only do they last longer, but they do not get hot to touch and are safer for indoor use than traditional incandescent lights. Plus, you can string more together than the traditional.
  • Use electrical timers for an easy way to remember to turn off all lights and decorations at night.
  • Inspect extension cords and use cords rated for exterior use. Make sure not to overload.
  • Keep outdoor extension cords from sitting in standing water.
  • It’s the most wonderful time of the year and we want it to stay that way by making sure you are being safe at your home.
